Lullwater House, Tudor-Gothic mansion in Druid Hills, Atlanta, United States
Lullwater House is a Tudor-Gothic mansion located on the shores of Candler Lake at Emory University. The structure features thick stone walls, soaring windows, and multiple chimneys that rise prominently above the surrounding landscape.
Walter T. Candler, son of Coca-Cola founder Asa Griggs Candler, commissioned architects Ivey and Crook in 1926 to design this residence. The building was later acquired by Emory University and has served as the official president's residence since 1963.
The house reflects the architectural tastes of early twentieth-century Atlanta's wealthy residents and shows what successful business families valued in their homes. Its stone details and pointed arches were common choices for those seeking to display their status through European-inspired design.
The property sits on the lakeshore and is accessible through the university campus, with maintained walkways and open grounds surrounding the building. Visit during pleasant weather to fully appreciate the architecture and the water views from the grounds.
Before becoming a university building, the estate was known as Lullwater Farms where Walter Candler raised thoroughbred horses and cattle on the expansive grounds. This farming chapter has vanished, but the name still hints at what the property once was beyond just a grand residence.
