Fernbank Science Center, Science museum in Atlanta, Georgia, US
Fernbank Science Center is a science museum in Atlanta, Georgia, offering exhibit halls and outdoor areas devoted to natural sciences and technology. Visitors find dinosaur skeletons, mineral collections, and aerospace artifacts among the displays.
The center opened in December 1967 as the first educational facility within a public school system to operate its own large planetarium. Over the decades, it expanded its range of science exhibits and educational programming.
The center maintains an extensive collection of exhibits, including dinosaur skeletons, mineral specimens, and the Apollo 6 spacecraft from NASA's Saturn V program.
Admission to the exhibit halls is free, while planetarium shows run on Fridays and Saturdays for a fee. The facility sits in a residential area and is accessible by car with parking available on site.
The Jim Cherry Memorial Planetarium holds a projection dome roughly 70 feet across and uses full digital immersion technology. This system was installed in 2012 through funding from Lockheed Martin.
