The Colonnades

The Colonnades is a residential complex comprising two three-story buildings with 24 total apartments arranged perpendicular to North Highland Avenue, encompassing a planted courtyard. The structures are connected through open colonnaded passages that create defined spaces and separate the individual units.

Construction began in 1916 when land near Ponce de Leon Avenue was subdivided to enable development of the new Virginia-Highland residential area. This initial phase was part of a broader effort to create upscale residential complexes across Atlanta.

The buildings display Italian architectural details with white columns set against red brick and ornate rooflines that define the neighborhood's character. Visitors immediately notice the decorative stucco work and carefully landscaped courtyard that evoke a Mediterranean setting.

The complex sits on North Highland Avenue with easy access to local shops and restaurants throughout the Virginia-Highland area. The two separate buildings are straightforward to explore, and the central courtyard provides a pleasant spot to view the architectural details from outside.
