Spelman College, Liberal arts college for women in Atlanta, United States
Spelman College is a women's institution on a 39-acre site with 26 buildings, including residence halls, an art museum, and classrooms in the university district of Atlanta. The campus sits southwest of downtown and forms a connected complex with lecture halls, libraries, and open spaces for campus life.
The institution was founded in 1881 as Atlanta Baptist Female Seminary and received its current name in 1924. It remains the oldest private institution of its kind for Black women in the United States.
The Museum of Fine Art on campus displays work by and about women of the African diaspora, connecting art with the educational mission of the institution. Visitors can view rotating exhibitions that highlight the legacy and contemporary creativity of Black women.
The campus is open to visitors attending the art museum or public events. Parking is available at the edge of the grounds, and pathways between buildings are mostly level and well marked.
Over 80 student organizations provide space for activities on campus, and many students participate in events together with the nearby Morehouse College. This connection facilitates exchange between the two institutions and shapes social life in the district.
