Zoo Atlanta, Wildlife park in Grant Park, Atlanta, US.
Zoo Atlanta is a zoological garden in Grant Park, Atlanta, spread across roughly 16 hectares and home to over a thousand animals from different continents. The facility is organized into several zones with enclosures for African elephants, gorillas, giant pandas, orangutans, and many other species from Asia, Africa, and the Americas.
The animal garden began in 1889 when a circus owner gifted the city a collection of animals. Over the course of the 20th century the institution grew from a modest menagerie into a center for species protection and research.
The name reflects a time when American cities named their zoological institutions after the metropolis they served. Today visitors see families with children pausing at the gorilla and panda exhibits while school groups stand before the enclosures taking notes.
Tickets can be reserved online, and the park is open daily except on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes, as the grounds include several hills and pathways that require walking.
The facility cares for one of the largest groups of western lowland gorillas in North America and is one of only four institutions in the US displaying giant pandas. The park also participates in international breeding programs for threatened species such as the Sumatran orangutan.
