Stone Mountain, City with parks and trails in DeKalb County, Georgia.
Stone Mountain is a town east of Atlanta in DeKalb County, spreading over residential streets with single-family homes and green spaces. The buildings remain low and spread out, with lawns sitting between the neighborhoods and the larger park areas.
The settlement began in 1839 as New Gibraltar and changed to its current name in 1847. During the 19th century, the granite quarries supplied building material for Atlanta's reconstruction after the Civil War.
Many families speak Spanish or other languages at home, which shows in local shops and school programs. Veterans form a visible part of the neighborhood, and their gatherings often take place at community centers.
The area is best reached by car, with parking at the main parks usually offering enough space. Those walking or cycling will find maintained paths and facilities for sports or swimming at Wade/Walker and other larger sites.
The local quarries once supplied major building projects in Atlanta until the Great Depression in the 1930s slowed extraction. Today, scattered rock formations and old access roads still recall that era of granite industry.
