Murphey Candler Park is a major recreational property with sports fields, tennis courts, a swimming pool, playgrounds, and picnic areas arranged around a central lake. The full site offers different zones for various activities and ranks among the largest outdoor recreation spaces in the area.

This site was established in 1954 following a land donation in 1950 and became the largest recreational area in North DeKalb County. Over the decades it was expanded and outfitted to meet growing demand for sports and outdoor activities in the community.

The fields and courts here have long served as gathering places where local families come to play sports and spend time together. The baseball diamonds and tennis courts remain central to the rhythm of weekend and weekday activities throughout the year.

The grounds are open most days and welcome visitors of all ages who want to walk, exercise, or spend time by the lake. It helps to check ahead about which facilities are available for your planned visit, since certain areas are sometimes reserved for events.

The lake holds largemouth bass, bluegill, redear sunfish and channel catfish, and Canada geese, mallards and beavers share the water. A flash flood in the early 1970s sent water over the dam and it began to leak; DeKalb County drained and dredged the lake, widened the dam and added a flood-prevention drain. Silt from construction in Dunwoody and Interstate 285 later forced a second draining, and the lake was dredged again in 1998 with a federal grant.
