Marietta, County seat in metropolitan Atlanta, United States.
Marietta is the county seat of Cobb County in metropolitan Atlanta, located north of the downtown core in a region surrounded by suburbs. The city covers an area crossed by Interstate 75 and U.S. Route 41, two major roads connecting it to the rest of the region.
The Western and Atlantic Railroad began operating here in 1850, making the town a key point for freight transport in northern Georgia. During the Civil War, Union troops occupied the town and destroyed parts of its infrastructure.
The Strand Theatre and Marietta Museum of History preserve local heritage through exhibitions, performances, and educational programs for the community.
The town is easily accessible via Interstate 75, with parking available near the historic center. Many facilities can be reached on foot, especially around the old market square.
Near the center runs the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History trail, which recalls the railroad history of the region. Visitors can see original 19th-century rolling stock there.
