Samuel Rockwell House

The Samuel Rockwell House is a Federal and Greek Revival residence in Milledgeville with two floors containing eight spacious rooms throughout. A detailed spiral staircase and twin foyers on each level connect the interior spaces.

Colonel Samuel Rockwell, an attorney from Maine, commissioned architect Joseph Lane to build this house in 1838. The construction took place when Milledgeville was a prominent administrative center and wealthy families were establishing grand residences.

The house served as a summer residence for Governor Herschel Johnson, who advocated for keeping the state in the Union during the pre-Civil War era. You can walk through the rooms that once hosted this significant political figure.

The house is located on Allen Memorial Drive and provides lodging accommodations with private bathrooms and sitting areas across multiple suites. Natural light flows well throughout the spaces, and rooms are easily accessed via the central spiral staircase.

The cast iron fence surrounding the property was more expensive and ornate than the house itself, revealing the owner's exceptional investment in exterior architectural details. This speaks to how wealthy residents prioritized visible refinements over the structure itself.
