Eatonton, County seat in central Georgia, United States.

The city extends across 20.7 square miles of land with an elevation of 173 meters in the Piedmont region of Georgia.

Established in 1807 as the seat of Putnam County, Eatonton received its name from William Eaton, a diplomat during the First Barbary War.

The city maintains strong connections to literature through notable authors Joel Chandler Harris and Alice Walker, who were born in this community.

The Putnam County School District operates five educational facilities, serving more than 2,400 students from primary through high school levels.

North of Eatonton lies the Rock Eagle Effigy Mound, one of only two such Native American archaeological sites east of the Mississippi River.
