Mercer House, House museum in Monterey Square, Savannah, United States.
Mercer House is a house museum on Monterey Square in Savannah, Georgia, built in the Italianate style. The main facade displays five tall French windows, wrought-iron balconies, and a classical portico supported by columns.
Construction started in 1860 for General Hugh Mercer but was interrupted during the Civil War and only finished in 1868. Cotton merchant John Randolph Wilder took over the work after the war.
The residence carries the name of General Hugh Mercer, grandfather of the songwriter Johnny Mercer from Savannah. Visitors walk through the preserved rooms where antiques dealer Jim Williams lived and worked until his death in 1990.
Guided tours take place from Monday through Saturday between half past ten in the morning and ten past four in the afternoon, on Sundays from noon until four. The museum closes every Tuesday and Wednesday in August.
The interior rooms display a collection of antiques, including Russian Fabergé eggs and Chinese porcelain from several dynasties. Jim Williams acquired these pieces during his decades as a collector and dealer in Savannah.
