The Candler Oak measures 54 feet in height with a circumference of 17 feet and extends its branches across a crown spread of 110 feet.
This Southern live oak has stood since the 1700s and received the first conservation easement granted for a single tree in the United States in 1984.
The Georgia Urban Forest Council designated this specimen as a Georgia Landmark and Historic Tree in 2001, recognizing its importance to the state's natural heritage.
Located at 516 Drayton Street near Forsyth Park, the tree stands on Savannah College of Art and Design property with protective fencing and security surveillance.
The Savannah Tree Foundation established a 6,804-square-foot protection zone around the tree to prevent any future development from affecting its root system.
