Sacred Heart Cultural Center
Sacred Heart Cultural Center, Cultural center in downtown Augusta, United States.
The Sacred Heart Cultural Center is a former church building in downtown Augusta featuring 94 stained glass windows from Munich, paired spires, and decorative brickwork in multiple styles throughout its facade. The structure contains Italian marble elements, a barrel-vaulted ceiling, and rose windows positioned at each arm of its cross-shaped floor plan.
The building opened in 1900 as a Catholic church to serve Augusta's growing immigrant communities. After operating as a church for seven decades, it was transformed into a cultural venue serving a broader public.
The space serves as a gathering place for performing arts and visual exhibitions that reflect the creative work of local artists. Community events and concerts throughout the year bring people together to experience music and contemporary art displays.
Self-guided tours are available Monday through Friday during business hours, with audio guides offered for rent at the entrance. The location sits in the downtown area with parking nearby, making it convenient to reach by foot or vehicle.
The building reflects German architectural influence, visible in its decorative details and craftsmanship choices made during construction. The selection of stained glass windows sourced from Munich demonstrates the strong cultural connections between Augusta and European art centers around 1900.
