The rectangular wooden building features two doors on the first floor with arched windows and a small attic window on the gable facade.
Founded in 1787 by Reverend Jesse Peters, the congregation traces its origins to Silver Bluff Baptist Church established between 1774-1775 in South Carolina.
The church hosted the 1866 Georgia State Freedmen's Conventions, establishing itself as a center for African American civil rights during the post-Civil War period.
Springfield Village Park adjacent to the church contains 2.5 acres of historical plaques, a fountain, and a 45-foot abstract sculpture for visitors.
The Augusta Baptist Institute, founded at Springfield Baptist Church, relocated to Atlanta in 1913 and transformed into the present-day Morehouse College.
