Graniteville, Census-designated place in Aiken County, South Carolina

Graniteville is a settlement along U.S. Route 1 with industrial buildings, worker cottages, and historic structures built from distinctive blue granite. The layout reflects a planned community with diverse building types from the 1800s.

William Gregg founded this industrial settlement in 1845 as the region's first large-scale cotton mill operation. The location grew with all necessary facilities including residences, shops, churches, and schools.

The historic district displays residential and mill buildings with Gothic Revival features that date to the town's founding period. This architecture continues to define the streetscape and reflects the area's industrial heritage.

A Bridgestone and Firestone manufacturing facility anchors the local industry, while Gregg Park Civic Center provides sports fields, a swimming area, and gymnasium facilities. The town offers basic recreation options for various activities.

A Norfolk Southern Railway accident in 2005 released chlorine gas, resulting in nine deaths. This event ultimately led to the closure of the Avondale textile mills and fundamentally altered the town's economic structure.
