Middleton-Pinckney House, Neoclassical residence in Charleston, United States
The Middleton-Pinckney House is a three-story building with stucco facing and a raised basement located on George Street in Ansonborough. The structure features classical details with carefully proportioned windows and trim throughout its exterior.
Construction of the house began in 1796 and was completed in 1797 by Frances Motte Middleton. The completion coincided with her marriage to Major General Thomas Pinckney.
The house displays the taste of Charleston's upper class for clean lines and balanced proportions visible in its facade and rooms. This design approach shaped how many buildings looked in the neighborhood during that era.
The building now houses the Spoleto Festival USA headquarters after undergoing extensive restoration work. Visitors can view the exterior and appreciate the classical architecture that defines this part of the neighborhood.
The property once served as the headquarters of the Water Works Company and featured a water tower standing beside the building. The rear grounds were used as a public swimming pool for the neighborhood.
