The Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art is located at the College of Charleston and features rotating exhibitions across gallery spaces on Calhoun Street. The galleries display works in various media, from paintings and sculptures to installations and digital projects.
The gallery was named after painter William Halsey in 1984, when the Studio Art faculty honoured his retirement; Halsey had taught the College of Charleston's first studio art course from 1964. It took its present name, Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art, in 2005, and in 2009 moved into the Marion and Wayland H. Cato Jr. Center for the Arts on Calhoun Street.
The Halsey's name honors painter William Halsey, who taught the College of Charleston's first studio art course in 1964; the faculty named the gallery for him on his 1984 retirement. His wife Corrie McCallum, the college's first printmaking teacher, is remembered alongside him: Charleston's mayor declared March 14 William Halsey and Corrie McCallum Day in 2018.
