Ladson Presbyterian Church, African American Presbyterian church in Columbia, United States
Ladson Presbyterian Church is a brick church building with Renaissance Revival design located in Columbia. The structure displays a rectangular form with twin entrance towers on the front facade and a gabled roof positioned above a raised basement level.
The church began in 1838 as a chapel connected to another Presbyterian congregation. It was rebuilt and enlarged in 1896 under the designs of architects Ziegler and Heidt.
This church served as a spiritual and social center for African Americans in Columbia, providing space for worship and community gathering. Visitors can observe how the building reflects the religious traditions and identity of the congregation.
The building is located on Sumter Street and welcomes visitors on weekends, especially around service times. Dress respectfully when visiting, as this is an active place of worship where regular services take place.
The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1998, recognizing its importance in African American religious history. Despite occupying a small lot, it maintains its classical symmetrical proportions and architectural details.
