Hampton-Preston House
Hampton-Preston House, Greek Revival mansion in Columbia, United States.
The Hampton-Preston House is a mansion featuring broad verandas, Doric columns, and a circular stairway with mahogany railings throughout its main structure. The building sits on a four-acre property with landscaped gardens and horticultural facilities.
The house was built in 1818 by a merchant and came into the possession of a wealthy family three years later, who retained it for five decades. This long-term ownership shaped its development and the care invested in its upkeep.
The house displays classical architectural elements that reflect the wealth and artistic taste of South Carolina's leading families in the 1800s. Visitors can observe how this elite designed and furnished their living spaces.
The property is walkable with broad pathways throughout the gardens and around the main house. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes since there are multiple levels and outdoor areas to explore.
Inside the house stands a white marble mantel created by a renowned American sculptor, displaying impressive carved details. This artwork is a rare example of such fine decorative work found in a private residence of the region.
