Hampton-Preston House
Hampton-Preston House, Greek Revival mansion in Columbia, United States.
The Hampton-Preston House features broad verandas with Doric columns, a circular stairway with mahogany rails, and a central crystal chandelier in the foyer.
Built in 1818 by merchant Ainsley Hall, the mansion was purchased by Wade Hampton I in 1823 and remained in the Hampton-Preston family for five decades.
The mansion exhibits the architectural elements of post-Colonial and Classical Revival styles, reflecting the preferences of South Carolina's nineteenth-century elite families.
The four-acre property includes themed gardens, the Boyd Horticultural Center, educational facilities, and public spaces available for community gatherings and special events.
A white marble mantel crafted by sculptor Hiram Powers stands inside the house, demonstrating the refined tastes of the Hampton and Preston families.
