Sumter, Industrial city in South Carolina, United States
Sumter is a city in South Carolina that spreads across roughly 85 square kilometers about 70 kilometers east of Columbia. The streets are laid out wide, residential neighborhoods alternate with commercial zones, while parks and public spaces break up the cityscape.
The settlement was founded in 1845 as Sumterville and renamed Sumter in 1855 to honor General Thomas Sumter from the Revolutionary War. Development accelerated in the 20th century with the expansion of military facilities in the area.
The city takes its name from General Thomas Sumter, a fighter in the Revolutionary War, while residents live a quiet daily life between military installations and schools. Local groups organize events around Swan Lake, which serves as a gathering place for families and garden enthusiasts.
The city is easy to explore by car, while public facilities are distributed across the urban area. Many shops and restaurants are located along main roads, so parking spaces are usually available nearby.
Swan Lake Iris Gardens houses all eight swan species in the world, which draws birdwatchers from different regions. The park serves every year as the venue for the Iris Festival, where visitors can admire thousands of iris blooms.
