Fort Jackson, Military training center in Columbia, United States.
Fort Jackson is a military installation in Columbia, South Carolina, covering roughly 21,000 hectares (52,000 acres) of land with more than 100 different training areas and exercise grounds. The installation includes rifle ranges, obstacle courses, simulation centers, and housing for thousands of recruits training at the same time.
The US Army established the installation in the summer of 1917 as a training camp for soldiers during the First World War and initially named it Camp Jackson. After the war, the grounds remained active and later received its permanent status as a military base.
The installation takes its name from the seventh President of the United States and serves today as the primary training center for new Army recruits. The on-site military museum displays uniforms, equipment, and personal items from soldiers across different eras of American military history.
Drivers reach the complex via interstates I-20, I-26, and I-77, all of which run nearby and are well signposted. Anyone wishing to visit the installation must stop at the entrance gate and present valid identification.
More than half of all new US Army recruits complete their basic training here, amounting to roughly 35,000 people each year. The grounds also operate their own fire station, post office, and several schools for the children of families stationed there.
