Borough House Plantation is a historic property with a main house and six additional buildings spread along South Carolina Highway 261 near Sumter. The buildings come from different time periods and display various construction styles from colonial times through the 19th century.
The original house was built in 1758 and served as headquarters for both British General Cornwallis and Continental Army General Greene during the American Revolution. The plantation changed hands multiple times during this turbulent period.
The buildings show how plantation owners lived and worked during colonial and antebellum times. You can see in the structures the differences between spaces for owners and working areas.
The property is easily accessible from South Carolina Highway 261 and offers a view of several well-maintained structures from different eras. Visitors should plan time to walk around and compare the various building styles across the site.
The property holds the largest collection of rammed earth buildings in the United States, using a specialized pisé technique from 1821. This compressed earth construction method was unusual for the region and remains a rare example of this historical craft.
