The community sits roughly 12 miles (19 kilometers) south of downtown San Francisco and includes residential neighborhoods, commercial areas, and green spaces.
The area was explored by a Spanish expedition led by Gaspar de Portolà in 1769 and later became part of Rancho Buri Buri. Official incorporation as a separate city occurred in 1914 after the community separated from Millbrae.

The community is accessible via multiple highways and two train stations serving both Caltrain and BART lines. San Francisco Airport sits just a few miles to the east, making long distance arrivals straightforward.
YouTube operates its headquarters here with more than 2,000 employees, making this a notable center for tech industry operations. Nearby lies the Golden Gate National Cemetery, one of the largest veterans memorial sites on the West Coast.
