Bank of Italy Building, Historic high-rise in Downtown San Jose, California

The Bank of Italy Building is a 14-story high-rise in downtown San Jose featuring Mediterranean Revival design elements and a prominent spire topped with green lighting. The structure rises approximately 78 meters and contains offices, law firms, tax services, and entertainment venues spread across its floors.

The structure was completed in 1926 as the second location for the Bank of Italy, the institution that later became Bank of America. It remained the tallest building between San Francisco and Los Angeles for several decades before being surpassed in 1970.

The building serves as a gathering place for professionals and visitors in downtown San Jose, with its distinctive spire visible from many streets. People pass by it regularly and recognize it as part of the city's character and identity.

The building features multiple elevators serving various offices, shops, and entertainment venues on different floors. Visitors should keep in mind that individual tenants operate on different schedules, so not all areas may be accessible at all times.

Local developers purchased the building in 2017 for approximately 27 million dollars with ambitious plans for transformation. Part of the space was intended to be converted into residential units while a restaurant was planned for the site.
