Foster City, Planned city in San Mateo County, US
Foster City is a town in San Mateo County in the United States with an extensive network of artificial lagoons and canals. These waterways run through the residential neighborhoods and create an environment where many properties have direct water access.
Jack Foster purchased the Brewer Island site in the early 1960s and began filling the marshland from San Francisco Bay. The first residents moved into the newly created neighborhoods in March 1964.
The town carries the name of T. Jack Foster, the developer who transformed marshland into a residential area. Residents use the many lagoons for water sports like sailing and kayaking in their daily routines.
The town sits about 20 miles (32 kilometers) south of San Francisco on the west shore of the bay. Most areas are flat and allow for easy cycling or walking along the waterways.
The crime rate ranks among the lowest in all of California with an average of one murder per decade. This circumstance is often attributed to the structure of the community and its manageable size.
