Marine World/Africa USA, Animal theme park in Redwood Shores, California, US
Marine World/Africa USA was an animal theme park in Redwood Shores, California, covering 27 hectares (66 acres) of reclaimed tidal land. The facility featured marine life shows and animal exhibitions with 500 animals from 400 species.
The park opened in 1968 as Marine World and merged with Africa USA in 1972 to form a combined attraction. Financial difficulties and rising property costs led to its relocation to Vallejo in 1986.
The name combined the original vision of marine life with wildlife attractions from Africa USA after the merger. Visitors experienced a program where trained animals such as elephants and orcas gave daily performances.
The site now sits in the heart of Silicon Valley and serves as an office complex for Oracle. Those interested in its history can occasionally find photographs and memorabilia in Redwood City local archives.
The Asian elephant Mardji, who appeared in Star Wars, performed here and displayed her movie costume to visitors. Judy, another elephant, demonstrated the unusual skill of water skiing.
