Brittan Party House

The Brittan Party House is a two-and-a-half story residence featuring an octagonal cupola, steep gables, and redwood shiplap siding that wraps around the structure. The building displays the distinctive geometric design typical of Octagon Mode architecture with its unusual floor plan and detailed craftsmanship.

Built in 1872 by Nathaniel Brittan, the house was designed as a hunting lodge and entertainment venue for wealthy society members. It emerged during a period when Gold Rush wealth fueled investments in elaborate private estates throughout the region.

The house served as a gathering place for wealthy San Francisco merchants and their social circles during the late 1800s. It reflects how successful business owners of that era used private residences to build and maintain their professional networks.

The property is located on Dale Avenue in San Carlos and is visible from the street, though interior access may be limited for visitors. Plan a daytime visit to view the architectural details and surroundings from different angles around the structure.

The building is one of only a handful of remaining Octagon Mode structures left in the San Francisco Bay Area. This unusual architectural movement of the 1800s enjoyed brief popularity, but most houses built in this style were demolished or substantially altered over time.
