Milpitas, High-tech city in Santa Clara County, US
Milpitas is a city in Santa Clara County, California, in the southern part of San Francisco Bay, characterized by residential neighborhoods, business centers, and industrial areas. The city borders San José to the west and Fremont to the north, sitting between hills and the bay.
The land originally belonged to Rancho Milpitas, which José María Alviso received in 1835, when the area was still under Mexican rule. The city was officially incorporated in 1954, after factories and new residents turned the rural valley into a municipality.
The birthplace of early settlers is shown through murals and signs in downtown, including references to Spanish and Mexican ancestors.
The city sits near Interstate 880 and Interstate 680, making travel around the Bay Area straightforward. The downtown is compact, and most shops and restaurants are along main roads or inside shopping centers.
The name comes from the small cornfields that early settlers planted along the creeks, long before the electronics companies arrived. Today only a few street names recall this agricultural past.
