The Blackhawk Museum is an automobile and art museum in Danville with roughly ninety well-maintained classic vehicles displayed in spacious galleries. Beyond the cars, the building also houses exhibitions on American Western history and African and Chinese artworks in the same spaces.
The museum was founded in 1988 and started as a private collection of classic cars before later adding galleries for Western history, African art, and Chinese objects. This expansion brought together different collecting interests under one roof.
The museum displays automobiles from different eras alongside art from Africa and Asia that collectors have brought together. This mix of vehicles and art objects gives visitors a sense of how different cultures value craftsmanship and design.
The museum is open daily from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm on most days. Tickets are non-refundable and can be bought at the door or online. It stands inside the Blackhawk Plaza shopping center in Danville, though it is run separately from the mall.
The museum holds a 1924 Hispano-Suiza H6C whose body panels are tulipwood, a lightweight hardwood used in early coachwork. It has also displayed a 1962 John F. Kennedy limousine and a Chinese Hongqi, the first Chinese-made car imported into the United States.
