Mount Diablo, Mountain summit in Contra Costa County, United States
Mount Diablo is a mountain summit in Contra Costa County, California, rising to 1,173 meters (3,849 feet). It dominates the view across the Bay Area and forms a widely visible elevation in an otherwise flat coastal landscape.
The summit was established as a meridian point for land surveys across California, Nevada and Oregon in 1851. A state park was later created to protect the area from development.
The Ohlone people knew this peak as Tuyshtak and connected it to their creation stories. Today the mountain appears in local accounts about early settlement and remains a reference point across the region.
The protected area covers about 20,000 acres with trails for walkers, cyclists and drivers. Weather and visibility change quickly, so pack layers and enough drinking water.
California condors have been sighted here after more than 100 years of absence. Their return shows the success of decades of conservation work for these rare birds.
