Refugees from the San Francisco earthquake founded a settlement here in 1906, initially called Rust. Incorporation took place in 1917 under the current name.
The name means "the little hill" in Spanish and refers to the gentle topography between flatland and rises. Neighborhoods show a mix of mid-twentieth-century homes and newer residential buildings along tree-lined streets.
The area around El Cerrito Plaza offers shops and access to public transit via the BART station. Residential neighborhoods sit on gentle slopes, and pedestrians find sidewalks along most main roads.
The Hayward Fault crosses through the town and shapes the layout of residential zones and open spaces. Some parks sit directly above this geological line.
