San Leandro

San Leandro is a city in Alameda County, California, sitting between Oakland and Hayward along the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay. The city stretches from the waterfront up to wooded hills in the northeast, with residential neighborhoods, commercial districts, and green spaces along the bay.

The area that became this city originated from two Spanish land grants in 1842 given to local families who raised cattle and farmed the land. The community grew following the California Gold Rush and incorporated as a city in 1872.

Portuguese immigrants established numerous farms and businesses after arriving from Hawaii and the Azores in the 1880s, forming two-thirds of the population by 1910.

Most visitor destinations concentrate near the marina and along the waterfront, where several parks provide bay access. The hills to the east offer hiking trails with views over the bay.

A chocolate factory operates in the northern part of the city and has been one of the larger employers for decades. The building is visible from the outside but typically not open for tours.
