Piedmont, Charter city in Alameda County, United States.
Piedmont is a charter city in Alameda County, California, completely surrounded by Oakland. This small municipality covers about 1.7 square miles of hillside residential area with elevations between 200 and 1000 feet (61 and 305 meters).
This area belonged to Rancho San Antonio, which the Peralta family worked from 1820 through a Mexican land grant. The community incorporated in 1907 and developed into an independent municipality within Oakland.
The name comes from Italian, meaning foot of the mountain, reflecting its location on the slopes of the Oakland Hills. Today, single-family homes with maintained gardens and tree-lined streets shape the character of this residential area.
AC Transit buses connect the municipality to several BART stations nearby, making trips around the Bay Area easier. Streets run along hillsides with some steep sections, so sturdy shoes are useful for longer walks.
Sidney and Irene Dearing purchased their home in 1924 through a white intermediary, becoming the first African-American property owners here. This purchase took place during a time when discriminatory practices prevented them from buying directly.
