Roseville is a city in Placer County, California, located north of Sacramento in the Central Valley. Several watercourses including Dry Creek and Linda Creek flow through the city, crossing its mostly flat terrain.
The settlement began as a stagecoach station called Griders, later renamed Junction after the railroad line from Sacramento was completed in 1864. The train depot grew into an important hub, giving the place its name and spurring its growth.
Local fields and green spaces reflect the agricultural past, while today the community consists mainly of residential neighborhoods and commercial districts. Many street names recall railroad terminology and former railway workers who once lived here.
Healthcare is available through large facilities such as Sutter Roseville and Kaiser Permanente, which operate throughout the area. The fire department offers emergency services, with several stations spread across the different neighborhoods.
In 1913, the Southern Pacific Railroad yard housed what was then the largest ice manufacturing plant in the world, supplying refrigerated freight cars for food transport. This facility turned the location into a central point for cooling perishable goods along the West Coast.
