Citrus Heights

Citrus Heights is a residential city in northern Sacramento County featuring single-family homes, shopping centers, and commercial corridors spread across flat terrain. The landscape is defined by wide streets, established neighborhoods, and retail developments concentrated along main thoroughfares.

The area was originally known for citrus farming before developing into a residential suburb in the latter half of the 20th century. Formal incorporation occurred in 1997, making it the fifth city in the county.

The San Juan Unified School District operates six elementary schools, one middle school, and two high schools, serving over 10,000 students in Citrus Heights.

Public transit connects neighborhoods and provides access to Interstate 80 and shopping areas, though driving is the most practical way to navigate the city. Most destinations are easily reached via main streets and commercial corridors.

The local police department, established in 2006, took over law enforcement operations from county sheriff patrols and gave the city independent control over public safety. This sets it apart from many surrounding communities that still rely on county authorities.
