Newport sits along the Pacific coast at roughly 40 meters elevation and offers the Oregon Coast Aquarium along with the Hatfield Marine Science Center near South Beach. The town spreads across several neighborhoods overlooking Yaquina Bay and the open ocean.
White settlers arrived in the area in 1864, and the town was formally established in 1882. In 1952 it became the administrative seat for Lincoln County.
The city carries its name from Newport in Rhode Island and keeps its connection to the sea through fishing activity still visible at the Bayfront. Sea lions rest on the docks and draw visitors who explore the harbor.
The Farmers Market runs every Saturday from 9 am to 1 pm between spring and fall, offering regional goods. Visitors can explore the town easily on foot, especially along the Bayfront and the beach.
