Yaquina Bay State Recreation Site, State recreation area on Yaquina Bay, Oregon
Yaquina Bay State Recreation Site is a recreation area set on a forested bluff above the bay, covered with spruce and pine trees. The site features a lighthouse and a large observation deck overlooking the water and the Pacific Ocean.
The site was originally managed by the U.S. Lighthouse Service before being handed over to the state in separate phases. These transfers marked important turning points in its development as a public recreation area.
The name Yaquina comes from the Native American people who once lived along these coasts. Their heritage remains woven into the local identity and stories.
The lighthouse is open to visitors at certain times and can be reached by climbing two flights of stairs. Plan your visit accordingly and be aware of coastal weather conditions that may affect your experience.
The lighthouse here is Oregon's only remaining wooden lighthouse, and it has living quarters built directly into the tower. This makes it a rare example of this type of construction on the West Coast.
