Seal Rock State Recreation Site, Coastal state park in Oregon, United States
Seal Rock State Recreation Site is a coastal state park along Oregon's Pacific shore featuring large offshore rock formations including Elephant Rock, Castle Rock, and Tourist Rock. The grounds include paved walkways leading to two fenced viewpoints and a steep path down to the beach level.
Development of this recreation site began in 1929 when Lincoln County provided initial land, with additional property acquired in 1936 and 1942. This gradual expansion formed the foundation for today's public facility.
The beach draws observers who study marine life in tidepools filled with sea stars, anemones, and barnacles alongside various seabirds. These pools offer a direct window into the Pacific's natural diversity.
A paved trail connects the free parking area to two fenced viewpoints, with steep sections leading to the beach requiring careful footing. Sturdy shoes and caution on uneven ground are important, especially during wet conditions.
The basalt formations originated from lava flows that erupted in northeastern Oregon roughly 15 million years ago. These ancient volcanic events created the rock structures that shape the shoreline today.
