The church was established in 1841 when the Methodist Mission relocated to Salem. It received recognition as a place of national historic importance in 1983.
The church houses archives of Methodist documents and historical records from the Oregon-Idaho Conference. These collections reflect the role this congregation played in shaping religious life across the wider region.
