Capitol Center, Bank building in downtown Salem, United States
Capitol Center is an eleven-story bank building that rises 151 feet at the corner of State and Liberty streets in downtown Salem. Its exterior features light pink Florentine sandstone covering a reinforced concrete frame.
Built in 1927 as the First National Bank Building, it became Salem's tallest office building when it opened. The structure represented important growth in the city's downtown business district at that time.
The fifth floor keeps original architectural details with mahogany doors that show the high standards of early 20th-century American banking design. You can see how much care went into creating spaces meant to inspire trust and confidence.
The building contains both modern and historic spaces after extensive renovations completed in the late 1980s to update facilities while keeping original character. Its downtown location makes it easy to reach by foot from other city attractions.
The building has gone through several name changes over the decades, from First National Bank Building to Livesley Building, then Cascade Bank Building, before becoming Capitol Center in the 1980s. Each name shift reflects different ownership and new purposes for the space.
