Broken Top, Stratovolcano in Deschutes County, US
Broken Top is a stratovolcano in the Cascade Range that reaches approximately 2,800 meters in elevation with glaciers clinging to its slopes. The mountain displays jagged ridges and a fractured summit where volcanic rock dominates the landscape.
The volcano formed through multiple eruptions beginning around 300,000 years ago and remained active until roughly 100,000 years ago. This extended period of eruption shaped the mountain's current structure.
The Three Sisters Wilderness around Broken Top contains 260 miles of trails through forests, lakes, and streams used by outdoor enthusiasts.
Climbing requires good fitness and careful footing on rocky terrain with exposed sections along the way. Summer months are best for visits when snow and ice are minimal and weather conditions remain more stable.
In 1966 a moraine dam at a glacial lake failed and triggered a flash flood down the mountain. The surge carved channels and moved boulders that remain visible on the slopes today.
