Antelope, City in Wasco County, Oregon, United States
Antelope is a small city in Wasco County, Oregon, located at approximately 2650 feet (808 meters) above sea level. The settlement sits along a former stagecoach and freight wagon route that connected The Dalles with Canyon City.
The community began in 1872 as a stop along the wagon road between The Dalles and regional gold mines. It received official city status in 1901.
From 1984 to 1986, followers of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh renamed the settlement Rajneesh after gaining control of the local government. During this period, daily life in the community changed completely as new residents arrived with their own ways of living.
The settlement retains its original zip code 97001 and now serves as a residential area with access to trails and outdoor activities. The surrounding landscape offers open access to public forest lands in the mountains.
In 1984, the community became the site of the largest biological warfare incident in American history when Rajneesh followers contaminated salad bars in local restaurants. The incident resulted in more than seven hundred illnesses and brought nationwide attention to the small town.
