University of Portland, Catholic university in North Portland, United States.
The University of Portland is a Catholic private institution in the northern part of Portland, Oregon, spread across roughly 50 hectares above the Willamette River. Gothic-style buildings shape the look of the campus, which offers views over the river and surrounding area.
The Congregation of Holy Cross founded the college in 1901 with 52 students and eight priests as teaching staff. Over the decades, departments and programs expanded until the current structure with five schools took shape.
The institution takes its name from the city on the Columbia River and follows the Catholic teachings of the Congregation of Holy Cross. The campus sits on a bluff that gives students wide views across river and mountains as they move between buildings.
The campus welcomes visitors, and main paths connect central buildings and green spaces. Parking is limited, so arriving by public transport or on foot from the nearby area works better.
The reserve officer training program is the largest of its kind among private colleges in the western United States and has operated since 1951. Graduates enter different branches of the armed forces after completing their studies.
