The Bell Tower stands in the Marian garden beside the Chapel of Christ the Teacher on the University of Portland campus. The 95-foot (29 m) brick tower, designed by Dan Danielson of Soderstrom Architects and built by Fortis Construction, has a glass-reinforced concrete cupola and a brushed stainless steel cross. Above the entrance is carved the Latin phrase Ave crux spes unica.

Plans for a bell tower at the University of Portland began in the late 1990s, and Allen and Kathleen Lund funded its construction. Fortis Construction built it over nearly nine months between late 2008 and early 2009, and the university held a Blessing of the Bells dedication in April 2009. Since then the tower has hosted vigils and campus demonstrations, including a 2017 gathering of more than 200 people opposing the repeal of DACA.

The tower's fourteen bells, cast in Amsterdam and supplied by Chime Master Systems of Ohio, ring the hours from 9:00 am to 10:00 pm, the Angelus at noon and 6:00 pm, seasonal hymns at 3:00 pm and the university's alma mater at 10:00 pm. Above the entrance is carved the Latin phrase Ave crux spes unica.
