Lipman–Wolfe and Company Building, historic building in Portland, Oregon, U.S
The Lipman-Wolfe and Company Building is a former department store built in 1912 in downtown Portland on SW 5th Avenue. Designed in the Chicago style with straightforward lines and functional design, it now functions as a hotel while retaining its historic exterior appearance.
The building was designed by Doyle & Patterson in 1912 and served as the flagship store for Lipman-Wolfe and Company. After decades as a retail destination, it was converted into a hotel in the mid-1990s, ending its department store operations in 1990 before becoming Hotel Monaco.
This building was more than a shopping destination - it served as a gathering place for Portland families, especially during the holidays. The annual radio show featuring the Cinnamon Bear brought children back year after year, connecting the store to cherished childhood memories across generations.
The building is centrally located in downtown Portland and easily accessible on foot, surrounded by shops, cafes, and other attractions. Today's hotel operations mean you can view it from the street or stay as a guest inside.
The building was known for its Chocolate Lounge, a special space where children could enjoy treats and young workers started their first jobs. This intimate setting set it apart from other department stores and shaped Portland's retail culture.
