Star Theater, Historic theater in Portland, United States
Star Theater is a theater building with 500 seats in downtown Portland located at the corner of Sixth and Burnside Street. The structure dates from 1911 and has been restored over time while keeping its original architectural details intact.
The building opened in May 1911 as Princess Theatre and was the first entertainment venue in downtown Portland to meet newly established fire safety standards. Its name changed later and its programming evolved from silent films alone to a wider range of live events.
The theater served as a hub for many types of live performance, from burlesque shows to concerts and theatrical productions. Today, the kinds of shows and how people use the space reflect its evolution from a simple movie house.
The building is easily accessible in downtown Portland and is regularly maintained with modern technical upgrades. This upkeep allows the older structure to function well while keeping its historical character.
The building was owned by filmmaker Gus Van Sant before changing hands in 2001. This shift marked a turning point in the types of events shown in the venue.
