Monastery of the Precious Blood
Monastery of the Precious Blood, Spanish Colonial Revival monastery in Montavilla, Portland, US
The Monastery of the Precious Blood is a former religious community building with white stucco walls, red tile roofs, and arched windows reflecting 1920s Spanish Colonial Revival design. The structure sits on spacious grounds and now serves as a residential facility for seniors.
The building was constructed in 1923 by architects Jacobberger and Smith to replace an earlier Greek Revival structure. This replacement was necessary to meet Portland's stricter fire safety standards of the time.
The monastery was originally a place of prayer and worship for French Canadian sisters who came to Oregon. Visitors can still sense the spiritual purpose behind the building's design and layout.
The building is located in southeast Portland's Montavilla neighborhood along SE 76th Avenue. Visitors should keep in mind that this is now a residential care facility, so access may be limited or require prior permission.
The building was established as a place of worship by the Sisters Adorers of the Precious Blood, a French Canadian religious community. This represents a specific religious tradition from French Canada that took root in Oregon's history.
