Roslyn is a small city in Kittitas County in the Cascade Mountains, situated about 80 miles (130 kilometers) east of Seattle at 685 meters (2,250 feet) elevation. The downtown area contains several historic buildings that remain from earlier decades.
The Northern Pacific Coal Company founded the city in 1886 to extract coal deposits in the region. The place became a major coal-mining hub, reaching peak activity around 1910.
