Camano Island, Coastal island in Possession Sound, Washington State
Camano Island is an island located in Possession Sound off the coast of Washington State, accessible via a bridge from the mainland. The landmass is surrounded by the Saratoga Passage and Port Susan, featuring an extended shoreline with varied landscapes.
Spanish explorer Jacinto Caamano named the island in the early 1800s during his voyage along the Pacific coast. After the War of 1812, settlers briefly called it Macdonough Island in honor of a naval officer before the Spanish name persisted.
The island was home to the Kikiallus and Snohomish peoples for centuries, and their presence shaped the land long before European contact. Evidence of their settlement remains visible through archaeological sites and place names around the island.
The island is reached by car via State Route 532 from Stanwood, with a bridge providing direct road access and no ferry required. Visitors should expect busier conditions during summer months when seasonal residents arrive at their vacation homes.
The island's population shifts dramatically with the seasons as thousands of property owners occupy their homes only during summer months. This creates noticeable swings in daily activity and the pace of life between quieter winter periods and busier warm-weather months.
