Statue of Leif Erikson, Bronze monument at Shilshole Bay Marina, Seattle, United States
The Statue of Leif Erikson is a bronze monument at Shilshole Bay Marina in Seattle depicting the explorer with shield, axe, and horn. The figure stands upon a tall granite pedestal positioned close to the water's edge.
The monument arrived for the 1962 Seattle World's Fair and stood at its original location for 45 years before undergoing major restoration work. The renovation brought the structure back to its intended appearance.
The surrounding plaza displays stones engraved with names of more than 2,300 Scandinavian immigrants who settled in the Pacific Northwest region. These inscriptions reflect the strong Nordic presence that shaped this area.
The statue is accessible year-round at the marina entrance with parking available nearby. Informational plaques at the site explain the Norwegian explorer's background and significance.
Two identical replicas of this statue exist at other locations: one in Trondheim, Norway since 1997 and another in Greenland since 2000. This worldwide presence reflects the international significance of this figure.
